When I taught fiction writing to kids, that was the age group that always asked, “Do we have to use punctuation?”

“Only if you want people to understand you,” I said when I had my act together–which wasn’t every time.

Sorry–“that age group” is nine- and ten-year-olds. I started with another comment, which I then decided was irrelevant but which, after I hit Send, I realized included actual information. Some editor I am.
