A curious word indeed indeed. But There are reasons for it. Classical Latin coda (tail) loses the D as Vulgar Latin evolves into French. (Compared Vulgar Latin vida (life) becoming vie, and roda (wheel) becoming roue, etc. But “coue” became caught up in the ou [ū] sound shift to the central vowel sound [ö], spelt eu in French. French writing rules required the c to be changed to Q (because of preceding the letter E), nence “queue”. 🙂 ☺
