This guy is my hero. I love his sense of humor. Don’t we all wish we could be him? I usually hit the delete button if it slips through Mailwasher, but I’ve sometimes been tempted. Here’s to a year of hummus in 2016.

I read an interesting article this week called “A Translation Site’s Clever Recipe Taste Test Shows How Wrong Google Translate Can Be.” Apparently a translation agency, ElaN Languages, worked with an ad agency, JWT Amsterdam, to produce a project and video called “Taste the Translation.” The project’s video shows a chef cooking the same Japanese recipe as translated by ElaN’s team of human experts vs. Google Translate’s automated results. The ad has won several awards. The results are hilarious, as you can expect. I think they did a great job illustrating the difference between man vs. machine in our industry. I hope you enjoy it.

Underfunded Schools Forced To Cut Past Tense From Language Programs [Hint: it’s The Onion, which for those of you who do not live in the U.S. is a very satirical website]
“Past-tense instruction is only the latest school program to face the chopping block. School districts in California have been forced to cut addition and subtraction from their math departments, while nearly all high schools have reduced foreign language courses to only the most basic phrases, including ‘May I please use the bathroom?’ and ‘No, I do not want to go to the beach with Maria and Juan.'”

I tripped over a couple of these. Tough even for native speakers of English. As the source of this tongue twister states: If you can pronounce correctly every word in this poem, you will be speaking English better than 90% of the native English speakers in the world.
Happy weekend (those of us in the U.S. will be off on Monday, giving us a three day weekend).
